TRAP THEM

"sleepwell deconstructor"
Year:  2007
Country:  US
City:  Boston
Label:  Trash Art Records
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  16
Time:  32 min.
Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Grindcore

TRAP THEM formed in 2002. They simply cracked the hostile cocoon into something more than an idea. It became a living breathing monster, deadset on distortion. Founding members Brian Izzi and Ryan McKenney gave themselves no guidelines, no pre-conceived delusions of takeover, no aspirations of success. They wanted to create music and they wanted it to damage. Over a decade and seven critically acclaimed releases (three EPs and four LPs) later, Trap Them have never strayed from the path they chose to walk. The music went from heavy to heavier, from dark to darker. Feral. Between every release, weeks and months were spent spreading the black gospel of distortion around the globe. There may be many questions about Trap Them, but there are only two answers. There is none more ugly and, most certainly, none more bitter. After two EP's this was their debut album and one of the best TRAP THEM recordings.

SIX FEET UNDER

"maximum violence"
Year:  1999
Country:  US
City:  Seattle
Label:  Metal blade
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  13
Time:   40 min.
Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk         Death Metal

The adjective "punk" next to "death metal" is in the sense of lyrical themes, but strictly musical Six Feet Under is basically death metal with some touches of rock'n'roll, punk and also hardcore... but  just a few ones.  Originally a side project for Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes and former Obituary guitarist Allen West, Six Feet Under eventually became a full-time proposition when friction between Barnes and his other bandmates became too much to bear. Featuring ex-Death bassist Terry Butler and drummer Greg Gall in the rhythm section, Six Feet Under issued their debut album, Haunted, in 1995. Barnes subsequently quit Cannibal Corpse, and Six Feet Under issued the stopgap EP Alive and Dead in 1996 to tide fans over until the following year's full-length, Warpath. Third album Maximum Violence appeared in 1999. Graveyard Classics followed a year later and 2001's True Carnage featured guest vocals from Ice-T. Double Dead arrived in 2002, followed by Bringer of Blood in 2003, Graveyard Classics, Vol. 2 in 2004, 13 and the Decade in the Grave box in 2005, Commandment in 2007, Death Rituals in 2008, and Graveyard Classics, Vol. 3 in 2010. The band eventually went through a membership shakeup in 2011-2012, with Gall leaving to form a new project, Exitsect, 2011 touring bassist Matt DeVries leaving to join Fear Factory, and Butler leaving to join Obituary. Six Feet Under recruited drummer Kevin Talley, guitarist Rob Arnold, and bassist Jeff Hughell to fill the spots, and later in 2012 released their ninth studio album, Undead. 2013's Unborn featured some guest guitar work from Whitechapel's Ben Savage and Torture Killer's Jari Laine, while 2015's Crypt of the Devil, the group's eleventh studio long player, saw Barnes collaborating with Cannabis Corpse bassist/vocalist Phil "Landphil" Hall. The following year saw the release of the group's fourth album of covers, the aptly-named Graveyard Classis, Vol. 4: Number of the Priest. ~ Steve Huey

COCK SPARRER

"Idem"
Year:  1978
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  Decca
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Oi!

Cock Sparrer is the first album by rock band Cock Sparrer. It was released in 1978 on Decca Records only in Spain. In 1977 Decca released two singles by Cock Sparrer, "Running Riot" b/w "Sister Suzie" and "We Love You" b/w "Chip on my Shoulder", neither of which achieved much success. Although the band recorded an album's worth of material, Decca dropped the band in 1978 and didn't release the album in the UK, but oddly did release it as this self-titled album in Spain, which featured the four songs released on singles and six more. The album was for the first time made available in UK in 1987 entitled "True Grift" by Razor Records. In 2000, the album was released by the austrian label DSS Records, which re-arranged the tracks and called it "Diamonds & Pearls". Then, in 2006, Captain Oi! released it "the decca years", which featured the album with 5 more tracks recorded during the same time. This album is usually described as "Oi! music" but in fact, there are also more music influences as classic rock'n'roll, pub rock or glam rock in the style of early 70's decade bands.

"running riot '84"
Year:  1984
Country:  UK
City:  London

Label:  Syndicate
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  32 min.
Genre:  electronic
Style:         Oi!

"running rio'84" is the third Cock Sparrer album and also their last one of their first era, from their beggining in 1976 until 1984. The album comprise eight new studio songs plus two old songs recorded in live, and became in their most commercial failure probably due their attempt to suggest new wave and synthpop public. The album use in all songs different electronic instruments as: drums, keyboards and modulated voices, perhaps with the goal to sound closer to new wave and to get a bigger public. But the result was in fact the opposite, and Cock Sparrer public and followers didn't accept very well the album. The thing is the band decided to dissolve, still in 1984, and didn't to make music again until ten years later, in 1994. Despite all, it's still a good album, but more melodic and softer than the rest.

Country:  US
City:  Saint Paul, Minnesota
Label:  SST
Format:  CD, 2 x LP
Tracks:  27
Time:  60 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Avantgarde

Hüsker Dü is rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. Hüsker Dü first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, later crossing over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternate songs. Following the release of three LPs and an EP on independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed Zen Arcade in 1984, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986 to release their final two studio albums. Mould later released two solo albums before forming Sugar in the early 1990s, while Hart released a solo album on SST and later formed Nova Mob. Norton was initially less active musically after Hüsker Dü's demise and focused on being a restaurateur instead. He returned to the recording industry in 2006.

DAG NASTY

"Can I say?"
Year:  1986
Country:  US
City:  Washington
Label:  Dischord
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  16
Time:  35 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Pop        Punk     Hardcore

Washington, DC based punk rock band originally affiliated with Dischord Records and featuring ex. members of Minor Threat & Bloody Mannequin Orchestra. The band formed in 1985 and broke up in 1988. In that time they went through a number of lineup changes. The "classic" line up of Brian Baker, Dave Smalley, Roger Marbury, and Colin Sears got back together to record in 1991 and 2002. In 2016 record label "Dischord" (own of Ian McKaye of Fugazi) issued a two songs single, which can to think us about new Dag Nasty album, probably in 2018... but it's just a suposition. Anyway this album is a must, excellent and essential.

"minority of one"
Year:  2002
Label:  Dischord
Format:  CD
Tracks:  12
Time:  36
Genre:  rock
Style:      Pop        Punk        Hardcore

Minority of One happened to be D.C. punk legends Dag Nasty's first album in ten years, following the lackluster Four on the Floor EP released through Epitaph in 1992. Where Four on the Floor's production woes held these emocore originators from truly shining, Minority of One glowed with fiery dedication to one's craft. Although it was 16 years since Dag Nasty first came together, they seemed to still have the spark that boosted them to such independent heights; the songwriting and musical achievements captured on this album were stupendous. Straightforward, melodically enhanced punk rock at its best is heard on these 11 tracks. Dave Smalley's vocals were still as blunt and pleasing to the ear, and Brian Baker's melodic guitar melted the heart with its intense sincerity. Even after all the time apart, Dag Nasty returned with an album that may be the best release in their career, proving that these musicians were still at the head of the pack, pulling on your emotions while moving the blood through one's veins; if only all emocore was this enjoyable and accessible.
